Cross-Border Check

Does your financial structure have gaps?

Cross-border problems rarely announce themselves — they hide in "not sure" and "no one's ever asked me that." Ten questions, three minutes.

Results are calculated in your browser; no name, email, or contact details are required.

01Do you hold property, savings, or investments outside Canada (China, Hong Kong, the U.S., or elsewhere)?
02In the next few years, is a significant sum likely to cross borders — a property sale, a gift, an inheritance?
03Where it applies, are you clear on foreign-asset reporting requirements (such as the T1135), and current on them every year?
04If you inherit assets from overseas one day, do you know what happens on each side of the border?
05Does real estate (including your home) make up more than half of your assets?
06Does any one of your advisors — accountant, lawyer, investment advisor — understand your complete cross-border picture?
07Has your or your spouse's tax residency changed in recent years, or might it change in the future?
08Do you own a corporation (in Canada or abroad) where the line between corporate and personal finances isn't fully clear?
09Were your will, insurance beneficiaries, or estate arrangements set up with only one country in mind?
10Of the items above, will any of them actually happen within the next twelve months — a property sale, money crossing the border, a residency change, an inheritance?
